A Photographer's Guide to Planning the Perfect Surprise Proposal | Edmonton Proposal Photography

Planning a surprise proposal? Get expert tips from a professional surprise proposal photographer in Edmonton, Alberta area.

Hi, I am Arnab, a wedding, engagement and surprise proposal photographer in Edmonton, Alberta.

First of all, shout-out to the guys who plan a surprise proposal! There is no way to make your woman love you more (or man for that matter, to be fair to same-sex couples) than to surprise her (him) with the ring when they least expect it! And if you go as far as hiring a photographer to document that moment, the biggest prize go to you! You are a hero, and if you wanted to plan and execute something so elaborate, no one would ever say no to you; you can be trusted to be a married person!

If you're contemplating surprising your partner with a ring and wish to have this moment documented but are uncertain about how to proceed, let's follow these steps:

Step #1 - Find a Photographer

Make sure your vision matches their photography style. If you lean towards light and airy photos, steer clear of hiring a photographer known for dark and moody shots. It's natural for people to have varying aesthetics, so find a photographer whose work aligns with yours. Connect with your selected photographer and have a thorough discussion about your project. Stay open to their suggestions! You might only go through this process once (fingers crossed!), whereas they have extensive experience. Dive into the specifics and be prepared for potential challenges you may not have considered.

Step #2 - Select date and location

Selecting the perfect setting can greatly influence the atmosphere of the proposal and the photographs that follow. Is this location new to you, or does it hold special meaning for you as a couple? It could be where you had your first date, shared your first kiss, or indulged in a mutual hobby. Alternatively, it could be somewhere entirely new for both of you – such as a concert, a new restaurant, or cheering on your favorite football team.

Step #3 - Consult the Location WITH the Photographer

Consult with the photographer about the location. Sometimes, what you think would be an ideal background may not be suitable due to the lighting conditions at that specific time of day. If necessary, think about changing the time or finding an alternative location. Talk about where the photographer should stand, how you should position yourselves for the best angle, and the ideal posture for your partner. A small adjustment like taking a couple of steps to the right or left might enhance your partner's facial expressions. Make sure to go through all the details carefully.

Step #4 - Time It Right

The perfect moment for a surprise proposal is during the enchanting 'golden hour,' that magical time just before sunset. Alternatively, right after sunrise works too. If you're someone who embraces the dawn with excitement (maybe to the dismay of us night owls), feel free to propose at sunrise – just don't count on us early risers to accompany you!

This doesn't mean that surprise proposals are limited to certain times of the day – feel free to follow the sun wherever it goes! Even on cloudy days or in busy urban settings, there are inventive ways to seize the ideal moment. Occasionally, simply locating a tall building during midday can offer evenly distributed lighting thanks to its shadow. However, keep in mind that high noon presents the least ideal lighting conditions, potentially leading to harsh shadows and unflattering highlights on your faces. Step #5 - Wear the Right Clothes

If you and your partner prefer a laid-back style, always comfortable in sneakers and jeans, go for it. If you're proposing on a hiking trail, wear what you feel best in. But, if your partner enjoys dressing up now and then, find a gentle way to suggest she wears your favorite dress and put effort into makeup and hair. Be mindful not to raise any suspicions. It might be simpler if the surprise proposal is tied to a concert outing rather than a family picnic – adapt to your situation! Step #6 - Communicate Effectively

Maintain regular communication with your photographer leading up to the proposal. Share any plan adjustments, weather updates, or travel issues discreetly. Make sure the photographer notifies you when they are set up and prepared. On the proposal day, message the photographer your estimated time of arrival and keep in touch until they confirm they are ready and in place.

Step #7 - Get some decor done

It is a great idea to have some decor done to surprise your partner. You can directly reach out to a decor person or ask your photographer as well for a decor person. They can definitely make your vision come true. Look at Manveer & Sonia’s proposal session.

Step #8 - Prepare for Post-Proposal Photography

Let the proposal moment linger for as long as you can. Even after proposing and standing up, there will be hugs, kisses, and heartfelt words shared. Enjoy this special moment; the photographer may not hear your words, so allow them to capture as many shots as possible until the initial excitement settles.

After the proposal, there comes a moment when your partner notices they are being photographed. This is when the photographer comes forward and introduces themselves. Make the most of this time post-proposal to capture special moments together, have fun, and savor the moment. The photographer will provide direction while allowing you to be authentic, resulting in not just proposal photos but also images perfect for your wedding invitations and save-the-dates. Consider it your engagement mini-session; you can skip it at a later time.

Step #9 - Embrace the Unexpected

When things don't go as planned, it's important to stay adaptable and ready for unexpected circumstances. Whether it's running late or facing unforeseen weather changes like rain, don't lose heart. Keep in touch with your photographer, reschedule, or delay if necessary. (In 2020, we had to reschedule a proposal three times due to COVID restrictions).

Alternatively, embrace the situation – personally, I find light rain acceptable as long as it's not heavy. Light rain can add a magical touch, creating misty effects that enhance the uniqueness of your photos! I don't mind getting wet during the shoot; the key is ensuring your partner is comfortable with her hair getting wet!

Step #10 - Celebrate and Share

Feel free to share your surprise proposal photos wherever you prefer! Social media offers a fantastic platform to share this special moment and let others join in on the celebration. Tag your surprise proposal photographer and share the love! We're eager to capture more couples like you!
